Summary Report

The University of Dhaka (DU) has undertaken various initiatives and plans to implement Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12). The University has already been working on ethical and sustainable sourcing of food, beverages, supplies, laboratory materials, construction, and other purchased goods, prioritizing worker rights, animal welfare, environmental protection, local producers, and public health.

DU also has plans for waste management and disposal, including the segregation of hazardous and general waste, a Zero Waste to Landfill target by 2040, maintaining a hazardous waste register, and conducting third-party audits. The University has taken steps to reduce single-use plastics and disposable items across the campus.

The same policies apply to suppliers and outsourced services. For large purchases or contracts, a “Plastic-Free & Low-Disposable Clause” is mandatory, and suppliers are required to use reusable or low-disposable packaging in accordance with University policy. Food and catering contractors are also required to comply with these policies.

DU is implementing waste tracking to accurately measure and monitor waste generation and recycling across the campus. The University publishes an annual Sustainability Report, which provides detailed information on environmental initiatives, resource management, and progress toward achieving the SDGs.
