Preamble

The University of Dhaka (DU), as Bangladesh’s premier public university, actively contributes to SDG 15: Life On Land through research, education, student engagement, and policy-aligned practices. DU supports the conservation of terrestrial ecosystems, forests, wetlands, plant and animal biodiversity, and threatened species, while promoting sustainable land-use practices.

Academic departments such as Zoology, Botany, Geography & Environment, Fisheries, and Soil, Water & Environment conduct research on wildlife conservation, forest ecology, ecosystem restoration, wetland management, and climate-change impacts on terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. These activities generate knowledge that informs policy, community awareness, and practical conservation strategies.

Student organizations, notably the Dhaka University Nature Conservation Club (DUNCC), and departmental initiatives organize tree-planting drives, biodiversity awareness campaigns, workshops, and seminars, engaging students and staff directly in conservation efforts and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship on campus.

Campus construction, land use, and expansion activities are conducted in compliance with national environmental regulations and Department of Environment (DoE) guidelines, ensuring protection of forests, wetlands, and natural habitats.

Through these multi-pronged activities, DU strengthens ecosystem protection, sustainable land management, biodiversity conservation, and environmental awareness, providing a foundation for Bangladesh’s sustainable development, natural resource preservation, and climate-resilient land-use practices.
