Preamble

The University of Dhaka (DU) actively contributes to the conservation and sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems in Bangladesh, encompassing rivers, wetlands, freshwater habitats, and fisheries. Through academic departments such as Fisheries, Zoology, Geography & Environment, and Soil, Water & Environment, DU conducts research, teaching, and applied studies on aquatic biodiversity, ecosystem health, sustainable irrigation, and fisheries management. These efforts provide a scientific foundation for sustainable resource use, biodiversity conservation, and climate-resilient aquatic management.

DU engages students and staff in awareness and practical conservation activities through student organizations like the Dhaka University Nature Conservation Club (DUNCC), campus events, workshops, and seminars. While large-scale community outreach programmes are limited, DU faculty participate in capacity-building initiatives, training, and national-level collaborations with institutions such as the Institute of Water Modelling (IWM), contributing expertise to policy, water management, and sustainable fisheries practices.

The University also emphasizes policy adherence and environmentally responsible campus operations, ensuring construction, water use, and waste management follow Department of Environment guidelines to protect wetlands and aquatic habitats. DU participates in marine science collaborations, regional research partnerships, and policy dialogues, advancing knowledge for sustainable ocean and freshwater resource management.

Through research, education, student engagement, applied studies, and advisory roles, the University of Dhaka supports SDG 14 – Life Below Water, fostering sustainable practices, ecosystem protection, and public awareness, thereby strengthening Bangladesh’s capacity to conserve and manage its aquatic biodiversity for future generations.
