The University of Dhaka (DU) is committed to climate action through a holistic approach encompassing education, research, innovation, and community engagement. In 2024, DU advanced its role as a leading institution in climate resilience by implementing capacity-building programs, student engagement initiatives, innovation summits, and sustainability projects. Key activities included the Certificate Course on Climate Change and Public Health, Future Cities urban sustainability programs, renewable-energy conferences, and the Environment Innovation Summit.
DU has initiated the transition toward low-carbon energy, exemplified by the installation of a 60 kW solar system at the Dhaka University Laboratory School and ongoing energy-efficiency measures. The University actively supports government and NGO-led climate adaptation efforts, providing technical expertise, research, risk mapping, early-warning advisory, and training for public officers and local communities. Collaborative programs with NGOs and local authorities foster community-based climate resilience and sustainable urban planning.
With a Climate Action Plan (2025–2030), DU targets a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, integration of climate education in all faculties, deployment of renewable energy, and the development of a climate-resilient, nature-based campus. By engaging students, faculty, and external partners, DU aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 and strengthen Bangladesh’s national capacity for climate mitigation, adaptation, and disaster preparedness.
Through these multi-pronged initiatives, the University of Dhaka reinforces its position as a national hub for climate education, research, innovation, and community engagement, exemplifying institutional leadership in advancing SDG 13 – Climate Action.
