The University of Dhaka actively contributes to the achievement of SDG 2 by addressing hunger, promoting food security, and supporting sustainable food systems both within the campus community and at the national level. The university recognises that food security is fundamental to academic success, wellbeing, and sustainable development.
On campus, the university ensures access to affordable, healthy, and culturally appropriate food for students, staff, and visitors through subsidised residential hall dining, cafeterias, food courts, and emergency support mechanisms. Special attention is given to economically vulnerable students and staff, ensuring that financial hardship does not result in food insecurity. Sustainable and plant-based food choices are widely available, and procurement practices prioritise locally sourced ingredients to reduce environmental impact and support regional producers.
Beyond the campus, the University of Dhaka plays a significant role in strengthening national food security. Through its institutes and academic departments—including those specialising in nutrition, agriculture, fisheries, environmental science, and related fields—the university disseminates knowledge, provides training, hosts events for local farmers and food producers, and facilitates access to research facilities and technologies. Faculty members regularly serve as resource persons and engage local communities in research and innovation initiatives that promote sustainable agriculture and aquaculture practices.
By integrating campus-level food security measures with national knowledge transfer and sustainable food system development, the University of Dhaka demonstrates a comprehensive institutional commitment to achieving SDG 2.
