The University of Dhaka (DU), as the premier public university of Bangladesh, plays a significant role in achieving Life on Land (SDG 15). The University contributes to the conservation of plant and animal biodiversity, protection of forests and ecosystems, and preservation of threatened species through research, education, student-led initiatives, and policy support. The Department of Zoology and the Department of Botany conduct research on threatened species and the conservation of forests and ecosystems, the Department of Fisheries focuses on river, wetland, and sustainable aquatic resource management, and the Department of Geography & Environment engages in research on ecosystem restoration, climate change impacts, and environmental risk management.
Student organizations, such as the Dhaka University Nature Conservation Club (DUNCC), organize tree-planting campaigns, forest and wetland conservation activities, and biodiversity awareness seminars and workshops. These initiatives allow students and staff to participate directly in practical conservation efforts while fostering an environmentally conscious culture.
Campus construction and expansion activities are conducted in accordance with national environmental regulations and Department of Environment (DoE) guidelines, ensuring the protection of local ecosystems and biodiversity. Through these efforts, the University of Dhaka makes substantial contributions to the conservation of plant and animal biodiversity, protection of threatened species, forest and wetland restoration, sustainable ecosystem management, and the promotion of environmental awareness among students. These initiatives provide a strong foundation for Bangladesh’s sustainable development and natural resource conservation.
