Dhaka University extends its educational mission beyond the campus, offering short courses, professional programs, and community initiatives that address specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and benefit a diverse audience, including alumni, local residents, and marginalized groups. These programs are designed to translate academic knowledge into practical skills and awareness that support sustainable development in society.
A notable example is the School of Ghashful, a non-formal school approved and budgeted by Dhaka University, which has been operating since 2012. Directed entirely by student volunteers, the program provides street children, young flower vendors, and other child workers living around the university campus with basic literacy and numeracy education, covering subjects such as Bangla, English, and Mathematics. Beyond academics, the initiative emphasizes holistic development through songs, poems, social skills, and health awareness lessons, including hygiene practices. Classes are held in open campus spaces, such as near the Teacher-Student Centre swimming pool area, providing a safe and engaging environment for learning.
Through initiatives like the School of Ghashful and other professional and short courses, Dhaka University demonstrates its commitment to empowering the wider community, promoting inclusive education, and fostering sustainable development beyond the formal student body.
