The University of Dhaka (DU), established under the Dhaka University Order 1973, plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the physical and mental well-being of its students, staff, faculty, and the broader community. With over 40,000 students, 6,500+ employees, and millions of annual campus visitors, DU functions as a significant public health ecosystem in Dhaka city, contributing directly to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.

Health Profession Graduates (2024)

  • Total graduates: 11,038

  • Graduates in health professions: 377
    This highlights DU’s contribution to producing skilled health professionals, enhancing national health capacity.

Collaborations in Health

  • Local: Dhaka Medical College and Hospital partnerships for joint seminars, clinical placements, case referrals, and research on infectious diseases, genetics, and antibiotic resistance.

  • National: Certificate Course on Climate Change and Public Health conducted jointly by DU’s Department of Disaster Science and Climate Resilience and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, training 40 professionals in climate-health resilience.

  • International: Institute of Health Economics led projects on health equity and rational prescription audits in collaboration with global research networks and WHO.

Health and Well-being Outreach

  • DU organized the Wellness Festival addressing mental health, mindfulness, and emotional well-being for students.

  • The Office of Student Guidance and Counselling provided over 5,000 counselling sessions to more than 1,300 students in 2024.

  • Humanitarian outreach: DU students raised over 2.9 million taka and distributed essential supplies during the August 2024 floods, supporting affected communities across multiple districts.

Shared Sports Facilities

  • DU promotes physical health and community well-being by opening its sports grounds and gymnasium to students and local residents.

  • Partnerships with national and local organizations allow structured use of facilities for recreational and sporting events, fostering inclusivity and social cohesion.

Sexual and Reproductive Health

  • The 24/7 Shahid Buddhijibi Dr. Muhammad Mortaza Medical Centre offers medical consultations, reproductive health services, and family planning support.

  • Menstrual hygiene is supported via vending machines in key campus locations.

  • Awareness programs and workshops promote sexual health, consent, and gender sensitivity.

Mental Health Support

  • Comprehensive services via the Office of Student Guidance and Counselling, Department of Clinical Psychology, and Nasirullah Psychotherapy Unit (NPU) reached over 4,000 patients in 2024.

  • Programs include psychotherapy, trauma care, cognitive-behavioral therapy, neuropsychological assessments, and student training.

  • Observance of World Mental Health Day and workshops enhance awareness and preventive mental health practices.

No-Smoking Policy

  • DU enforces a strict smoke-free campus policy across all indoor and outdoor areas.

  • Awareness campaigns, workshops, and a monitoring committee ensure compliance, fostering a safe and healthy environment.
