The University of Dhaka recognizes that ensuring good health and well-being includes providing students with accessible, confidential, and comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare services. In line with its inclusive health policy and commitment to student welfare, the university has developed a strong system of preventive, medical, and educational support to promote awareness, safety, and dignity across campus life.
At the center of these initiatives stands the Shahid BuddhijibiDr. Muhammad Mortaza Medical Centre, a 24/7 healthcare facility located near the Science Annex Building. The center provides free medical consultation and treatment to all students, along with specialized reproductive health services. Female students have access to qualified female doctors, including specialists in gynaecology, who are available in two shifts every day of the week. This consistent presence ensures that students can seek professional care related to reproductive health, menstrual health, and other gender-specific medical concerns with privacy and confidence.
In addition to medical consultations, the university extends family planning services through a government-run satellite clinic hosted inside the Medical Centre. This clinic operates six days a week (Saturday to Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.), offering counseling, contraceptive services, and awareness on responsible family planning. Located on the second floor of the facility, it plays a crucial role in promoting reproductive rights and informed choices among young adults.
The university also promotes menstrual hygiene and accessibility through sanitary napkin vending machines, installed in five key locations across campus, including the Female Common Room of the Faculty of Business Studies. This initiative helps ensure that female students can manage menstrual health conveniently and with dignity—an important yet often overlooked aspect of student well-being.
Beyond healthcare facilities, the University of Dhaka supports a culture of awareness and education through seminars, courses, and awareness programs related to sexual and reproductive health, consent, and gender sensitivity. These programs often involve expert speakers, counselors, and educators who aim to dispel myths, encourage responsible behavior, and create an informed student community.
Furthermore, the university enforces a strong institutional framework to protect students from sexual misconduct and to promote respectful interpersonal relationships. The Sexual Harassment Prevention Committee, active across all departments and residential halls, serves as a confidential and accessible platform for complaints and counseling. The committee’s presence reinforces the university’s broader vision of a safe, inclusive, and gender-sensitive academic environment.
Together, these efforts—spanning medical services, family planning, menstrual hygiene, health education, and gender protection—reflect the University of Dhaka’s holistic approach to sexual and reproductive health. By integrating access, awareness, and advocacy, the university ensures that its students not only receive healthcare when needed but also grow into informed, responsible, and health-conscious members of society.
