Local Start-up Financial Assistance

The University of Dhaka contributes to poverty reduction and sustainable local economic development by facilitating access to financial assistance for start-ups and early-stage entrepreneurs through institutional platforms, partnerships, and capacity-building initiatives. While the university may not directly operate a standalone seed funding scheme, it plays a critical enabling role by connecting aspiring entrepreneurs with funding opportunities, financial institutions, investors, and national entrepreneurship support mechanisms.

University-Based Entrepreneurship and Funding Facilitation

The Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (ICE) Centre of the University of Dhaka serves as a central hub for nurturing start-up ideas and linking entrepreneurs to financing ecosystems. In 2024, the ICE Centre continued to function as an Entrepreneurship Support Cell (ESC) in collaboration with national financial institutions, including Bangladesh Bank, thereby facilitating access to start-up finance, advisory services, and post-training support for local entrepreneurs and youth.

Through this institutional linkage, participants from the university and surrounding community receive guidance on accessing pre-seed funding, innovation grants, and start-up financing schemes operated by national agencies and development partners. This indirect yet structured financial facilitation plays a significant role in enabling financially viable and socially responsible business ventures.

Department-Level Initiatives Supporting Funding Readiness

Several academic departments and faculties actively support financial readiness for start-ups through specialized programs. For example, the Department of Management has organized workshops such as “AI-Powered Startups: From Idea to Funding”, which focus on transforming innovative ideas into investment-ready business models. These programs equip participants with practical knowledge on funding mechanisms, investor engagement, financial planning, and pitch development.

Similarly, the Dhaka University Entrepreneurship Development Centre (DUEDC) conducts entrepreneurship training programs, boot camps, and mentoring sessions that prepare aspiring entrepreneurs to access formal financing and investment opportunities. These initiatives directly enhance participants’ capacity to secure funding and sustain their ventures.

Exposure to Investors and Funding Platforms

The Faculty of Business Studies and other academic units regularly host business fairs, innovation showcases, and start-up competitions, where students and community-based entrepreneurs present their ideas and products to industry representatives, financial institutions, and potential investors. Such platforms provide early-stage entrepreneurs with exposure to seed funding opportunities, venture capital networks, and corporate partnerships, thereby reducing financial barriers to start-up formation.

Inclusive Impact on the Local Community

These financial assistance facilitation mechanisms are not limited to enrolled students alone. Many programs are open to local youth, aspiring entrepreneurs, and community participants, ensuring that university resources contribute directly to local poverty reduction through enterprise creation and income generation.

Impact

By enabling access to start-up financing through institutional partnerships, training for funding readiness, and exposure to investment networks, the University of Dhaka supports the establishment of financially and socially sustainable businesses. These initiatives demonstrate the university’s commitment to empower individuals and communities to overcome poverty through entrepreneurship and economic self-reliance.
