Sustainable fisheries (community outreach)

1) Department of Fisheries — Academic & Outreach Context (DU, 2024)

Academic Programmes (Formal Education)

The University of Dhaka’s Department of Fisheries offers structured academic programmes that include topics directly related to sustainable fisheries and aquaculture management. These are part of regular degree programmes rather than community outreach, but they provide knowledge and capacity building that can indirectly benefit communities and stakeholders

  • B.Sc. (Honours) in Fisheries — 4-year undergraduate degree covering aquatic ecology and limnology among other fisheries sciences.
  • M.Sc. (Fisheries and related fields) — includes courses such as Sustainable Aquaculture and Environmental Management, Inland Fisheries Management, Coastal & Marine Fisheries Management, Aquatic Pollution & Climate Change and Fisheries, and Fisheries Policy and Governance, which relate to sustainability and ecosystem management.
  • MPhil / PhD — advanced research on aquatic environments, biodiversity conservation, and aquaculture sustainability.

These academic offerings strengthen expertise in sustainable fisheries and aquaculture and can support community education through trained graduates, government collaboration, and applied research.

Note: These are formal academic courses rather than direct outreach programmes for general communities.

2) Community Outreach/Engagement (Direct & Indirect)

Official “Outreach” Programmes

  • There is **no clear, publicly announced 2024 community outreach programme specifically branded by the University of Dhaka that focused on sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture, or tourism in a way that engages local or national communities directly (such as free workshops for fishermen, farmers, tourism operators, or coastal communities) in the official DU news or sustainability pages.

Relevant Community-Relevant Activities (Indirect)

  • DU departments and clubs do engage in environmental and ecosystem awareness activities, such as the Dhaka University Nature Conservation Club (DUNCC), which conduct workshops and campaigns with local communities on ecosystem conservation (though not solely fisheries/aquaculture/tourism).
  • The Department of Fisheries’ research output and labs, and faculty research emphasise areas like aquaculture health, fish ecology, pollution impacts, and resource management — which form the scientific basis for sustainable sector practices that can benefit broader community knowledge.

3) Tourism & Community Outreach

  • In publicly available 2024 information, no specific DU-led community education or outreach programme was found solely dedicated to sustainable tourism management for local or national communities.
  • Activities or research related to environmental sciences and sustainable development through the Faculty of Earth & Environmental Sciences may integrate tourism-relevant ecosystem components (e.g., coastal/resource management), but such efforts are generally part of broader academic and research processes rather than formal community outreach events.
