Maintain ecosystems and their biodiversity (direct work)

In 2024, the University of Dhaka (DU) contributed to the maintenance and conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity primarily through research, academic collaboration, and expert engagement, rather than through large-scale, publicly branded industry-led conservation programmes.

1. Research-Based Contributions

DU conducted ongoing research activities in 2024 through several departments and institutes that focus on ecosystems under threat, biodiversity conservation, and environmental sustainability, including:

  • Department of Zoology – research on wildlife biology, biodiversity conservation, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and threatened species.
  • Department of Botany – research on plant diversity, ecosystem health, and conservation of native and threatened flora.
  • Department of Fisheries – studies on aquatic ecosystems, fish biodiversity, ecosystem stressors, and sustainable resource management.
  • Department of Geography and Environment – research on climate change impacts, wetlands, rivers, coastal ecosystems, and ecosystem degradation.

These research activities contribute scientific evidence and policy-relevant knowledge essential for protecting fragile ecosystems, including wetlands, rivers, forests, and aquatic environments.

2. Engagement with Government and Applied Sectors

In 2024, DU faculty members:

  • Provided expert input, research findings, and technical advice to government agencies, development partners, and sectoral stakeholders working on environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience.
  • Participated in national workshops, conferences, and policy dialogues related to ecosystem management, conservation planning, and sustainable use of natural resources.

While these engagements are often project- or expert-based, they represent direct knowledge exchange between the University and applied sectors influencing ecosystem conservation.

3. Conservation Awareness and Student-Led Engagement

DU departments and student organisations (e.g., nature and conservation clubs) organised awareness events, seminars, and campaigns in 2024 focused on:

  • Biodiversity protection
  • Wildlife and habitat conservation
  • Environmental degradation and ecosystem threats

Although these activities are not industrial conservation projects, they support long-term ecosystem stewardship and public awareness.
