The University of Dhaka (DU) plays a significant role in the conservation of aquatic ecosystems and sustainable management of marine and freshwater resources in Bangladesh. Through various academic departments and research centers, the University conducts research and educational activities focused on rivers, wetlands, aquatic biodiversity, and sustainable fisheries. The Department of Fisheries carries out studies on sustainable river and wetland management, aquatic biodiversity conservation, and fish health and productivity. Additionally, the Departments of Zoology and Geography & Environment are actively engaged in projects related to freshwater ecosystems, wetland management, and the conservation of aquatic life.
Student organizations, such as the Dhaka University Nature Conservation Club (DUNCC), promote awareness about aquatic ecosystems and engage students and staff in practical conservation activities. The University organizes seminars, workshops, and awareness campaigns to educate local communities on sustainable water management, overfishing, and destructive fishing practices.
Campus construction, water use, and waste management activities are carried out in compliance with national environmental regulations and Department of Environment (DoE) guidelines, providing safeguards for wetlands and natural aquatic habitats.
In summary, the University of Dhaka contributes to SDG 14: Life Below Water through research, education, student-led initiatives, and policy adherence, supporting the conservation of rivers, wetlands, and freshwater ecosystems, promoting sustainable practices, and raising environmental awareness. These efforts provide a strong foundation for the sustainable management and protection of aquatic biodiversity in Bangladesh.
