Dhaka University’s historic campus is entering a new phase of sustainable transformation through its comprehensive “Further Development of the University of Dhaka” Masterplan, the largest redevelopment initiative in its 103-year history. Backed by a government allocation of TK 2,841.86 crore, the plan proposes a modern academic town built around efficient infrastructure, greener spaces, and upgraded facilities—moving the university toward a future-ready, energy-smart campus.
A major component of this transformation is the systematic modernization of existing buildings. Out of 989 structures, the plan calls for the replacement of outdated facilities with 92 new, efficient buildings, many designed with improved insulation, better natural lighting, and modern engineering standards that reduce long-term energy consumption. Alongside new construction, 173 existing buildings are slated for renovation under a dedicated government allocation, allowing DU to retrofit older structures with more efficient materials, redesigned ventilation, and updated utility systems.
The masterplan’s architectural philosophy emphasizes walkability, green coverage, and natural cooling, reducing the need for energy-intensive transportation and artificial climate control. Residential halls are being reorganized into clusters within walking distance of classrooms, while expanded lakes, tree cover, and open courtyards help regulate ambient temperature. The plan also includes enhanced drainage, modern waste management systems, and redesigned public facilities—all contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable campus environment.
With academic towers, residential halls, administrative blocks, sports complexes, and public infrastructure undergoing redevelopment, DU is laying the foundation for infrastructure that meets modern efficiency standards. The initiative is currently in the final approval stages at ECNEC, with construction expected to begin soon after endorsement.
Overall, Dhaka University’s masterplan demonstrates a clear institutional direction: upgrading and redesigning the campus to operate more efficiently, reduce environmental strain, and support a more sustainable academic ecosystem for decades to come.
