Summery Report

The University of Dhaka (DU) is strengthening its institutional commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) through policy actions, research leadership, and sustainability-oriented infrastructure planning. The university is working to ensure long-term environmental resilience in key areas such as wastewater management, water security, and community-based awareness.

A significant achievement for DU is its role as the lead Bangladeshi partner in the JST–JICA SATREPS international research project focused on water quality monitoring and purification to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Dhaka.

On campus, DU has ensured access to safe and free drinking water through purified water stations installed across academic buildings, residential halls, administrative areas, and common spaces. The university is also considering water-conscious building standards for future construction and renovation, including efficient plumbing systems, water-saving design elements, and sustainable landscaping across its 19.53 acres of green space.

In addition, DU is considering initiatives such as developing a campus-wide water reuse measurement system, offering water-management training for local communities, providing research support to WASA and other agencies, planning sustainable groundwater extraction, and contributing expert insights to national water-security dialogues. The university also promotes mindful water use through campus-wide awareness campaigns and student-led activities.

Through these initiatives, the University of Dhaka is further consolidating its national leadership in water-related sustainability, strengthening its alignment with SDG 6, and contributing to a healthier water environment for both the campus and the surrounding community.
