Campus greenery at the University of Dhaka, showing drought-tolerant and sustainable plantings

1. Key Activities in 2024

  • Campus Green Space Management: DU maintained approximately 19.53 acres of green spaces, gardens, and shaded areas, providing environmental benefits and aesthetic appeal.

·  Planting Flowers and Trees: Various flowering plants and trees were planted to enhance campus beauty and biodiversity.

Water-Conscious Planting: The planted species were primarily drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, reducing irrigation needs and supporting sustainable water use.

Campus greenery not only conserves water but also helps regulate temperature and maintain ecological diversity.

2. Future Plans (2025–2030)

  • Expansion with Drought-Tolerant Plants: New plantings will prioritize species that require minimal water while thriving sustainably.
  • Efficient Irrigation Systems: Implement drip and automated irrigation systems integrated with rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse.
  • Regular Monitoring & Maintenance: Conduct ongoing monitoring to optimise watering schedules and maximise water efficiency.
  • Awareness Programs: Educate students and staff on water-conscious landscaping practices and plant selection.

3. Summary

In 2024, the University of Dhaka continued water-conscious landscaping efforts, focusing on drought-tolerant species and sustainable green spaces. Future plans aim to expand these efforts through modern irrigation systems, careful plant selection, and community awareness, contributing to reduced water use and support for SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation).
