Students hunger interventions

The University of Dhaka has multiple institutional interventions in place to prevent and alleviate hunger among students, particularly those from low-income and vulnerable backgrounds. These interventions operate through residential halls, academic departments, health services, and administrative support systems to ensure that no student’s education is disrupted due to food insecurity.

A primary intervention is the provision of highly subsidised meals in all university residential halls. Hall dining facilities offer affordable, regular meals that are accessible to economically disadvantaged students. In cases of acute financial hardship, Hall Provosts and House Tutors are authorised to provide emergency support, including temporary meal access without immediate payment, ensuring continuity of food intake.

For students facing sudden financial crises—such as family emergencies, illness, or delayed stipends—the university follows a rapid response mechanism. Departmental teachers, Heads of Departments, Faculty Deans, and central administrative offices coordinate to provide urgent assistance related to food, accommodation, or fees. This system allows for early identification of hunger-related risks and timely intervention.

The University of Dhaka Medical Centre contributes indirectly but significantly to hunger prevention by offering completely free healthcare services and essential medicines to students. By reducing healthcare-related financial burdens, students are better able to allocate limited resources toward food and basic living needs.

In addition, the Department of Student Guidance and Counselling, along with designated counselling teachers in each department, plays a critical role in identifying students experiencing economic stress, mental distress, or food insecurity. These units provide counselling support and facilitate referrals to appropriate university assistance mechanisms, including meal-related or financial interventions.

Furthermore, the university maintains subsidised canteens and food services across the campus, ensuring affordable food access for both residential and non-residential students. These measures collectively function as a comprehensive hunger intervention framework, tailored to the socio-economic realities of students in a lower-middle income country context.

Through these integrated and context-sensitive interventions, the University of Dhaka actively prevents and alleviates student hunger, supporting student wellbeing, retention, and successful completion of studies.
