The University of Dhaka promotes sustainable and inclusive food choices across its campus by ensuring the regular availability of affordable, plant-based and vegetarian meals that align with environmental sustainability, cultural diversity, and student wellbeing.
Vegetarian food is a core component of daily meals provided in university residential halls and campus canteens. Typical hall and canteen menus include rice, lentils (dal), seasonal vegetables, leafy greens, and other plant-based dishes. These meals are not only affordable for students from low-income backgrounds but also environmentally sustainable, as they rely largely on locally sourced and seasonal food ingredients, reducing food miles and environmental impact.
Special consideration is given to cultural and religious diversity in food provision. At Jagannath Hall, which traditionally accommodates Hindu and other non-Muslim students, vegetarian meals are specifically and consistently provided to meet dietary preferences and religious practices. This institutional arrangement ensures that students can access appropriate, nutritious, and culturally acceptable food without additional financial burden.
Across the campus, vegetarian meals are widely available in canteens and dining facilities and are often the most economical food options. This accessibility encourages plant-based dietary choices among students and staff, supporting both sustainability goals and food security.
While the university does not operate a separate vegan-only food system, the predominance of plant-based meals ensures that students seeking low-meat or vegetarian diets can easily meet their dietary needs. These practices reflect the university’s commitment to sustainable food systems that are affordable, culturally sensitive, and suitable for a lower-middle income country context.
Through these measures, the University of Dhaka ensures sustainable food choices for all on campus while promoting inclusivity, environmental responsibility, and student wellbeing.
