Staff hunger interventions

The University of Dhaka provides multiple institutional interventions to prevent and alleviate hunger among its staff, including academic and administrative personnel. These interventions ensure that all members of the staff have access to affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate meals, supporting both wellbeing and productivity.

A central component of this support is the University Club, which offers high-quality meals at significantly subsidised rates for teaching and non-teaching staff. Additionally, campus facilities such as the CARs Cafeteria, the Registrar’s Office canteen, and various faculty lounges provide regular, affordable, and healthy meal options designed primarily for staff members. These facilities ensure convenient access to food during working hours without financial burden.

While the primary interventions are staff-oriented, members of the staff may also avail themselves of food services in residential halls and campus canteens, which are primarily intended for students. This supplementary access complements the staff-specific options, providing further flexibility and coverage.

For staff facing temporary financial hardship or exceptional circumstances, the university maintains a responsive support mechanism, coordinated through department heads and administrative offices, to provide timely assistance in accessing meals or essential food items. While a formal staff food bank is not operated, these arrangements effectively mitigate hunger risks and ensure nutrition for staff members.

Through this integrated framework—including staff-targeted subsidised dining, accessible cafeterias and lounges, supplementary access to student dining facilities, and emergency support—the University of Dhaka demonstrates a strong institutional commitment to staff food security. These practices align with SDG 2 by ensuring affordable, healthy, and accessible food for all staff members, contributing to overall campus wellbeing.
