Summery Report

The University of Dhaka (DU), established under the Dhaka University Order 1973, is a statutory public institution committed to fairness, equal opportunity, welfare, and strong labour protections. With more than 6,500 employees, DU is one of South Asia’s largest and most equitable public-sector employers, maintaining transparent, accountable, and inclusive employment systems aligned with national laws and SDG 8 principles.

1. Living Wage & Compensation

All employees—faculty, officers, and staff—are paid under the 8th National Pay Scale, ensuring a verified living wage. Benefits include housing and medical allowances, festival bonuses, pension, gratuity, and research support.

2. Worker Representation

DU recognizes democratic worker bodies such as DUTA, the Officers’ Association, and associations for third- and fourth-grade employees. These groups actively engage in welfare discussions and collective bargaining processes.

3. Non-Discrimination

The University enforces zero discrimination based on gender, age, religion, ethnicity, disability,  or socioeconomic background. Transparent recruitment, merit-based promotion, anti-harassment committees, disability inclusion, and confidential complaints ensure fairness.

4. Modern Slavery Prevention

DU strictly prohibits child labour, forced labour, bonded labour, and exploitative contracts. All contractors undergo verification, and workers receive rights-based orientation to maintain a zero-exploitation environment.

5. Third-Party Worker Protection

Outsourced workers receive equal wages, safety equipment, training, access to leave, and anonymous grievance channels. DU monitors compliance from contract approval to field-level supervision.

6. Pay Scale Equity

The University applies the national pay scale uniformly, guaranteeing equal pay for equal work. No employee faces salary differences based on gender, religion, age, caste, or minority status.

7. Gender Pay Tracking

Annual HR analytics are used to monitor gender representation and detect pay gaps. Identified disparities are corrected through established reporting and accountability processes.

8. Salary Appeal Process

A formal, retaliation-free mechanism allows employees to appeal salary and promotion decisions. The process includes submission, evaluation, committee review, and written feedback.

9. Labour Rights & Freedom of Association

DU upholds workers’ rights, including freedom to form organizations, collective bargaining, non-retaliation protections, and regular rights-awareness training. HR oversees monitoring and ensures policy compliance.

Conclusion

Through legally grounded policies and strong institutional practices, the University of Dhaka demonstrates a comprehensive commitment to SDG 8. DU promotes living wages, equitable pay, non-discrimination, collective bargaining, gender equality, and modern slavery prevention—ensuring dignified and fair employment for all.
