The University of Dhaka (DU) demonstrates a broad and impactful commitment to SDG-11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, through initiatives in transportation reform, waste management, infrastructure improvement, digital governance, environmental restoration, and cultural heritage preservation. In 2024, DU advanced a series of structured, evidence-based programs that improved campus sustainability, strengthened community well-being, and enhanced institutional resilience.
Transportation & Mobility:
The university promotes safe and sustainable mobility through well-regulated campus transport, student–centric transit facilities, and a vehicle-free policy in core zones. DU actively collaborates with the national “Traffic Week” initiative and operates internal bus services ensuring safe mobility for students and staff.
Waste Management & Recycling:
A comprehensive waste system operates across the campus, integrating landfill, recycling, biomedical disposal, and chemical waste treatment. Plastic reduction, composting, responsible e-waste disposal, HIPAA-aligned data protection measures, and periodic audits are in place to improve environmental performance.
Environmental Management & Biodiversity:
DU maintains clean and green campuses through systematic cleaning, landscaping, regular tree plantation, biodiversity monitoring, and conservation awareness programs. Air and water quality assessments, noise-reduction initiatives, and disaster-resilient infrastructure planning reflect DU’s focus on a safe learning environment.
Public Engagement & Urban Safety:
The university works with local authorities to uphold road safety (following BUET guidelines), enforces strict use of helmets and seat belts, and ensures gender-friendly, harassment-free spaces. DU promotes inclusive development through student unions, clubs, counselling centres, and grievance mechanisms that strengthen institutional trust and social cohesion.
Cultural & Heritage Protection:
DU preserves multiple heritage sites—Curzon Hall, Shahid Minar, Aparajeyo Bangla, Mall Chattar, and jagged historic landmarks—through conservation programs, guided educational visits, and restoration projects. Heritage awareness campaigns, exhibitions, and national commemorative events ensure cultural continuity and public engagement.
Data Management & Digital Governance:
With a strong emphasis on data responsibility, DU implements secure information systems, privacy-compliant records, and digital archiving. Annual reviews identify risks and mitigate threats related to student data, financial records, and administrative operations.
Disaster Preparedness & Community Safety:
Emergency response protocols, fire safety drills, health facilities, and campus-wide surveillance systems contribute to resilient and safe communities. Water management structures, drainage upgrades, and climate-responsive building practices further reinforce DU’s urban sustainability objectives.
In 2024, the University of Dhaka significantly strengthened its contributions to urban sustainability through structured policies, environmental stewardship, heritage conservation, and community-focused governance. DU’s initiatives demonstrate a clear alignment with SDG-11 by fostering safe, inclusive, resilient, and environmentally responsible campus communities that positively influence the broader city ecosystem.
