Affordable housing for students (2024)

University of Dhaka provides affordable and well-structured residential facilities for its undergraduate and graduate students through a network of halls of residence. These facilities cater to both male and female students, accommodating students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, ensuring access to safe, affordable, and centrallylocated housing.

  • The University currently operates 23 residential halls and hostels for students (both male and female), including 7 female halls/hostels and Jagannath Hall dedicated for minorities.
  • Some new buildings like buildings in Bijoy Ekattor Hall, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall for male students and Rokeya Hall(including the 7 March building) andSufia Kamal Hall for female students offer modern accommodation with improved facilities, capable of housing a larger number of students.
  • Halls offer various room types, including single, double, triple and more occupancy, at nominal rent fixed annually by the University. Some accommodations are provided at subsidized rates for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Students’ hall rents are substantially lower than private market rates in Dhaka city, ensuring affordability for the majority of enrolled students.
  • Allocation of rooms follows transparent procedures: priority is given to first-year students, students from distant districts, and those with financial constraints.
  • Halls provide additional facilities such as common rooms, dining services, libraries, and recreational spaces, fostering an inclusive student community.

These residential facilities form part of the University’s broader mission to support equitable access to higher education, reduce the commuting burden for students, and create a supportive academic environment.
