Public access to buildings (University of Dhaka 2024)

The University of Dhaka provides open public access to multiple buildings, monuments and cultural landscapes of historic and civic significance on its campus. These sites are actively used by citizens, students, visitors and cultural groups for remembrance, cultural expression and public gatherings, and are therefore important components of Dhaka’s living heritage.

Key publicly accessible buildings, monuments and landscapes:

  • Curzon Hall (Faculty of Science): British Raj-era heritage building; publicly accessible exteriors and campus circulation; access to interiors/departments may be subject to office hours. https://www.du.ac.bd/faculty_slider/64/1244
  • Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) and the TSC compound (TSC lawn / Muktijuddho sculpture area / Raju Memorial Sculpture / TSC cultural precinct): a long-standing cultural and civic hub open to students, visitors and the public for debates, cultural events and social gatherings. https://www.du.ac.bd/offices/TSC
  • Aparajeyo Bangla (Liberation War Monument): prominent public sculpture on the Arts Building forecourt and freely accessible for public visitation, ceremonies and cultural programmes.

  • Mausoleum of Kazi Nazrul Islam (Nazrul grave / memorial): the national poet’s mausoleum within the campus is open to visitors and used for commemorative activities.
  • Other historic graves and memorials: several historic gravesof notable scholars and national figures like Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah’s grave, the tombs of ‘three leaders’ and memorial sites like Dhaka Gate vicinity on campus are accessible to the public.
  • Central Administration, Senate Building and other civic spaces: while administrative offices require official business for interior access, the campus precincts and façades of these buildings are accessible to the public during visiting hours. The Senate Building also have public access through prior permission for any events and program.

Notes on access & usage:

  • The University campus is a public urban space, where many monuments, lawns and public art works are intentionally sited for civic access, cultural programmes and remembrance events. Some interior access (offices, laboratories, restricted halls) may be limited to official hours or authorized visitors.
  • The University routinely hosts public cultural processions, commemorative events (e.g., Mangal Shobhajatra, International Mother Language Day, University Foundation Day) and academic/cultural programmes which depend on public access to these sites.
