Maternity Policy Supporting Women’s Participation

Policy Basis:
Formulated in accordance with the Maternity Benefit Act, 1939 (as amended) and the Government Servants (Leave) Rules, 2008 of the Government of Bangladesh.

1. Introduction

The University of Dhaka is committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment that enhances women’s participation in education and professional life. Recognizing the physical, mental, and familial needs during maternity, this policy has been developed to ensure that women can continue their academic and professional engagements in a safe, dignified, and supportive setting.

2. Objectives

  1. To provide necessary support to female teachers, officers, staff, and students during maternity.
  2. To ensure retention of women in their academic or professional roles through maternity leave and related benefits.
  3. To ensure adequate time and facilities for health, mental well-being, and childcare during maternity.

3. Scope

This policy shall apply to:

  • All permanent and contractual female teachers, officers, and staff of the University;
  • Female students (particularly at postgraduate and research levels) who require academic support during maternity.

4. Policy Guidelines

4.1 Maternity Leave

  • Permanent female employees of the University shall be entitled to six (6) months of paid maternity leave, in accordance with government regulations.
  • Leave may be taken before or after childbirth, but the total duration shall not exceed six months.
  • This benefit shall be applicable for a maximum of two times for the same employee, as per government provisions.

4.2 Support for Students

  • Academic deadlines (classes, examinations, thesis submission, etc.) may be extended due to maternity-related reasons.
  • With the approval of the Department Chairperson or Dean, academic leave or special consideration may be granted.
  • Under the “Mother-Friendly Campus” initiative, students shall have access to childcare facilities (Day Care Centre).

4.3 Workplace Support

  • Day Care Centres / Nursery Facilities shall be expanded for female employees.
  • Designated Lactation Corners (Breastfeeding Rooms) shall be made available for nursing mothers.

  • A Re-entry Support Program shall be introduced to help women smoothly return to work and restore work-life balance after maternity leave.

4.4 Health and Psychological Support

  • The University Health Centre shall provide medical check-ups, consultations, and necessary healthcare services during maternity.
  • Counseling services shall be made available for working mothers and student mothers to ensure their mental well-being.

5. Complaint and Support Mechanism

  • Any employee or student facing discrimination or negligence during or after maternity may file a complaint with the Gender Equity and Welfare Committee.
  • The University Administration shall ensure timely resolution of complaints and take appropriate action in case of policy violations.

The University of Dhaka recognizes maternity not as a barrier to women’s education or professional life but as a natural and dignified phase of life. The University is committed to ensuring that all female students and employees receive appropriate support during and after maternity, enabling their continued participation and professional advancement.
